Economy Malaysia

Malaysia, a middle-income country, has transformed itself since the 1970s from a producer of raw materials into an emerging multi-sector economy. After coming to office in 2003, former Prime Minister Abdullah tried to move the economy farther up the value-added production chain by attracting investments in high technology industries, medical technology, and pharmaceuticals, an effort that continues under current Prime Minister Najib. The Najib administration also is continuing efforts to boost domestic demand and to wean the economy off of its dependence on exports. Nevertheless, exports - particularly of electronics - remain a significant driver of the economy. As an oil and gas exporter, Malaysia has profited from higher world energy prices, although the rising cost of domestic gasoline and diesel fuel, combined with strained government finances, has forced Kuala Lumpur to reduce government subsidies. The government is also trying to lessen its dependence on state oil producer Petronas, which supplies 40% of government revenue. The central bank maintains healthy foreign exchange reserves and its well-developed regulatory regime has limited Malaysia's exposure to riskier financial instruments and the global financial crisis. Nevertheless, decreasing worldwide demand for consumer goods hurt Malaysia's exports and economic growth in 2009, although both began showing signs of recovery late in the year. In June 2010 Najib will introduce the Tenth Malaysia Plan, outlining new reforms. Najib already has introduced several reforms in the services sector in a bid to attract direct foreign investment, which has stagnated in recent years.

Malaysian Festivals

The country is strongly divided along ethnic lines with the three largest ethnic groups being Malays, Chinese and Indians. In addition, there are a number of smaller indigenous peoples in the territories of Sarawak and Sabah. Hari Raya Puasa is a celebration marking the end of a Muslim month of fasting and abstinence, Ramadan. It is a special occasion for Muslims. Hari Raya Puasa officially begins at the sighting of the moon on the day before the next month on the Muslim calendar, Syawal. To the Chinese, the most important festival is Chinese New Year, which falls in either January or February. It is ushered in with the lighting of fire crackers at midnight on the eve of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Deepavali or The Festival of Lights" is celebrated during the 7th month of the Hindu calendar. Hindus celebrate it by adorning their homes with dozens of lights or oil lamps, called vikku, to signify the triumph of good over evil and thus light over darkness. The spirit of Christmas is felt very much in Malaysia, especially in hotels, department stores and homes of Christians. Christmas trees, decorations, brilliant lights, Santa Claus and carols add to the festive air.On other hand, the Iban’s and Bidayuh’s of Sarawak celebrate the end of paddy harvesting season with much merry-making, dancing and drinking of tuak, a potent rice wine.

Lying just north of the equator, Malaysia is located at the south of Cambodia and Vietnam and north of Singapore and Indonesia. More than one thousand islands are part of Malaysia with some 38 designated as marine parks. Parts of the primeval rainforest are more than 100 million years old with a dazzling selection of birds and wildlife. Malaysia has superb golden beaches, lush vegetation, mountains and fabulous shopping allied to some magnificent hotels. This has made the country the fastest growing destination in South East Asia. The mix of the ancient and the ultra-modern make Malaysia a fascinating place to visit, while the low cost of living and huge visitor choice makes it an ideal holiday location.

Education in Malaysia

Today the Malaysian education system is a reasonably successful one, responding to the demands for equity among the different ethnic groups as well as the needs of a rapidly developing economy. The literacy rate is 84 percent, the figures for males and females being 89 percent and 79 percent, respectively. Primary school enrollment is above 90 percent for both males and females, while enrollment at the secondary level is 66 percent for females and 58 percent for males, presumably reflecting the higher labor force demands on males. At the tertiary level enrollment is 11 percent overall.

Religious education is found under the rubric "moral education," which allows for religious instruction without offending any specific ethnic group. Bahasa Malaysia and English are compulsory subjects, with the latter recently receiving increasing attention. The other subjects taken at the secondary level depend on what options are chosen in addition to the usual required academic subjects commercial studies, home science, agricultural science, and industrial arts.

The independence of Malaya does not relief the Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman from complexes. The first of which was to determine exactly what territories would be included in the new state.
